Description
The Temple in the sea, was first built in 1947 by Sadhu, an indentured labourer from India but was destroyed by the government as it was built on State-owned land. Over a 25 year period, Sadhu rebuilt the temple, this time in the sea. It was connected to the mainland by a pedestrian causeway.
Years after his death in 1994, reconstruction work was carried out on the temple. In December 1995 the Sewdass Sadhu Shiv Mandir was consecrated, with Sadhu’s remaining family among the large crowds. Today, flags and statues adorn the temple’s perimeter.
